Writing Disabled Characters: Channelling Erasure Into Excitement

  • Homewood Suites by Hilton 40 Bay Street South Hamilton, ON, L8P 1H6 Canada (map)

Disabled people represent 25% of the planet. By extension, one of every four characters in every work of fiction should be disabled. Instead, the vast majority of CanLit books include zero disabled characters. Abled authors are correct to avoid appropriating the first-person voice and lived experience of disabled protagonists, but drawing on her work as author and disability activist, Dorothy Ellen Palmer will encourage all authors to include more secondary disabled characters. Using improvisation and audience participation, Palmer offers tips about how to include disabled characters in ways that are honest, inclusive, respectful and fun.
