Tim and Janet's Favourite Fall Books

Although all book seasons are wonderful. There is something about fall season that is just a little more special. Here are some books that we are excited about, and it was no easy feat to whittle all that we want to read to just these choices. Hope you enjoy these picks.

All You Can Kill – Pasha Malla (Coach House Books)

One of our favourite of 2021 was Pasha Malla’s Kill the Mall, so we cannot wait to see what hijinks our narrator and his accidental companion gets up to. This book takes place on an island wellness retreat. We were lucky enough to hear an excerpt from All You Can Kill and Malla’s description of an all you can eat buffet made us cry from laughing so hard. We will think twice about ever eating buffet style again.

May Our Joy Endure – Kevin Lambert (Biblioasis)

There is always a bit of a celebration here when a new Kevin Lambert book arrives.  So we are certainly looking forward to his examination of the ultra-privileged. He moves between the prospective of his protagonist Celine, an internationally renowned architect, and her critics opposed to her gentrification of Montreal to illustrate the terrible beauty of wealth, influence, and art.

Satellite Image – Michelle Berry (buckrider Books)

In honour of one of our mum’s 85th birthday, we are picking one of her favourite writers. A couple buy a house and they excitedly look it up on a satellite image website. Unfortunately, what they see is what looks to be a dead body in their backyard and that is just the beginning of the weirdness. Definitely a thrilling page-turner of a book!

All Hookers Go To Heaven –Angel B H (Invisible)

Mag, raised in a conservative Christian home, falls for another woman while training to become an Evangelical missionary. Confused and shamed, she leaves her home and becomes a sex worker navigating challenges and dangers while trying to find a place for herself.

Inside Every Dream, A Raging Sea – Liz Worth (Book*hug)

In Inside Every Dream, A Raging Sea, tarot card reader Liz Worth examines how the thin lines between ritual, magic, and daily life blur.  Or do they exist at all? Read and find out. We will be!

Thyme Travellers: An Anthology of Palestinian Speculative Fiction – edited by Sonia Sulaiman (Fernwood)

Sonia Sulaiman has brought together a collection of 14 short stories by Palestinian writers from around the world. Speculative fiction as a genre invites a reconfiguring of reality, and here each story is a portal into realms of history, folklore and futures.

Days and Days – Chris MacDonald (ECW Press)

Chris MacDonald is back with more stories from his life. This time him and his friend have gone to Europe with little money, no places to stay, and after many wild adventures end up in the rehearsal space of their favourite punk band, the underrated Leatherface. This meeting is what influences MacDonald to become a writer, and we sure are happy that he did!
